Evaluating the taxonomic status of Bromus rigidus

Description
Bromus rigidus appears on the list of plants found in California, however, it was placed in synonymy with Bromus diandrus in the Flora of North America. Its treatment elsewhere varies, with some sources treating it as a species and others placing it in synonymy with Bromus rubens subsp. rubens. If Bromus rigidus is recognized, it will be necessary to create an illustration of it for the website being developed to provide access to high-resolution illustrations of North America’s grasses. Consequently, we decided to conduct a formal reevaluation of its status. We examined 115 specimens from the Intermountain Herbarium collection measuring 12 continuous and 2 categorical morphological characters. These specimens included herbarium specimens labeled as either Bromus rigidus or Bromus diandrus plus the four other species of Bromus sect. Genea found in North America (B. madritensis, B. rubens, B. sterilis, and B. tectorum). We used Principal Components Analysis and Random Forests to analyze the data. After the initial analyses, we reidentified a few specimens based on our data and reran the analyses. Our data do not support the inclusion of B. rigidus in B. rubens but do provide some support for its recognition as an infraspecies of Bromus diandrus. We recognize that a major limitation of our study is that it is based solely on the examination of herbarium specimens which do not provide sufficient information to evaluate differences in chromosome number or ecology. We shall provide a key and a map of the distribution of Bromus rigidus and Bromus diandrus based on specimens in the Intermountain Herbarium.
