Description
Athyrium and allied species (the “athyriid” ferns) form a clade of mostly terrestrial ferns that are distributed worldwide with most diversity represented in Asia. The treatment of this group has been inconsistent, with some workers recognizing one genus, Athyrium, and others splitting the clade into multiple genera including Anisocampium, Cornopteris, Ephemeropteris, and Pseudoathyrium. Most studies have focused on particular clades or geographical regions, which has limited the resolution of generic ambiguity. We used four chloroplast genes to infer a phylogeny of the athyriids focusing on non-core-Athyrium species that have been difficult to place.  Our updated phylogeny will help resolve uncertainty in the generic circumscriptions of athyriid ferns.
