Even more hidden figures in biodiversity specimen collections: Tracking agent contributions in Symbiota

Description
The network of people connected to biodiversity specimens goes far beyond collectors and identifiers. Every day, thousands of diverse and dedicated people contribute to the digitization and digital curation of biodiversity specimen data; however, their contributions are rarely tabulated or acknowledged. Here we use the content management system and biodiversity aggregator software Symbiota (https://symbiota.org/) to demonstrate how the “invisible” work of data curators can be tracked and reported. Because Symbiota preserves edit histories and allows association of ORCID IDs to user profiles, we can aggregate information about portal users’ contributions. Although few tools currently exist to leverage these data, we describe potential opportunities for using these statistics to credit and measure effort in new ways. Tracking the contributions of data curators is part of a broader community goal to disambiguate the people connected to biodiversity specimens, a vision shared by Symbiota developers. To this end, Symbiota developers are working toward integrating unique identifiers of other agents such as collectors and identifiers with specimen data. We will also report on progress toward this aim.
